Flexible Drive and Tool have many years’ experience in the Design and Manufacture of Inner Cores for many flexible drive applications. We have been manufacturing Inner Cores for almost 100 years in the UK and are one of the last remaining businesses who are able to do this.
Inner Cores consist of a number of layers of high tensile steel wire, wound in alternate layers and directions to provide a shaft that will offer a combination of torque transmission and flexibility. We are able to supply a range of sizes from 3.4mm up to 22mm diameter and we have the ability to design the layers and adjust the heat treatment of the Inner Core to match the mechanical properties your application requires.
Depending on the direction of the wind the torque transmission capability can vary. In the majority of Inner Cores, the “Lay” of the wires will be matched to the direction of rotation of the Inner Core. When operating in the opposite direction to the “Lay” of the wire a reduction in torque transmission can be expected and this may be as much as 30%. Flexible Drive and Tool can manufacture right of left “Lay” Inner Cores. In some cases, the torque transmission is required in both directions and in this case a “bi-directional” Inner Core will be specified.
Flexible Drive and Tool can help you to select the most appropriate Inner Core size to match your power source.
Flexible Shaft assemblies for power drives are typically between 5 and 10 metres but other applications, such as remote controls, can be up to 25 metres in length. Flexible Drive and Tool can also supply Inner Core in Drum quantities of up to 600 metres, depending on the diameter of the Inner Core.
The bend radius and the number of bends in the Flexible Drive Shaft design can affect the maximum power transmission. Heat can also be generated by friction if the bend radius is too small, especially with high-speed drives. The preferred bend radius for the Outer Casing will depend on the Outer Casing diameter and Flexible Drive & Tool can provide guidance on this.

The Company story began in the late 1920s in London selling imported descaling units. The business grew rapidly and new premises were needed in South Kensington in the 1940s. Manufacture of Flexible Drive products started at this time and was combined with a collect and repair service for flexible shafts in the London area.
